CASCADIA PRESCRIBED BURN ASSOCIATION

WELCOME TO THE

Empowering Landowners for a Resilient Future

OUR MISSION

A well organized community led network of personnel, tools, training, and resources, enabling landowners and managers to conduct prescribed burns that are both safer and more effective at meeting their objectives.

"From my perspective, PBAs are important from the standpoint that they involve a coalition of landowners working cooperatively—specifically, by sharing equipment, skills, knowledge, and costs—engaged in the use of prescribed fire to manage their lands for the benefit of all, including their own land."

Dale Swedberg retired WDFW Land Manager

WHO WE ARE

We are a community collaborative of all ages and experience levels dedicated to fostering healthy landscapes through the responsible use of prescribed fire. Our membership is composed of landowners, community members, experienced fire practitioners, and environmental stewards. We collaborate with local agencies and organizations to enhance forest resilience, protect against catastrophic wildfire, and nurture wildlife habitats. We empower our community with the knowledge, tools, and support needed to sustainably manage our lands.

Why Prescribed Burns?

Prescribed burns are a key tool in managing land sustainably. We not only improve forest health but also revitalize wildlife habitats and mitigate the risk of uncontrolled wildfires.

How We Help

  • PRE-BURN

Our pre-burn process involves detailed site assessment and planning, ensuring every prescribed burn is carefully tailored to the landowner’s objectives and conditions. The PBA can assist in permitting, unit preparation, and resource networking, setting a solid foundation for a successful burn.

  • BURN IMPLEMENTATION

The PBA can organize personnel and provide specialized tools, equipment, and PPE to safely implement the prescribed fire. The diverse range of experience and cooperative community engagement ensure the burn is conducted safely and efficiently, meeting the landowner’s objectives and comfort levels.

  • POST BURN

After the burn, we enjoy a bbq together and help with clean-up. In the days that follow the PBA helps monitor the site to assess the burn's impact and support the land's recovery. This essential phase helps guide future land management strategies for ongoing ecosystem health and treatment effectiveness.

PBA MEMBER TESTIMONIALS

  • “PBAs help give communities back the lost tool of good fire, which was used abundantly and effectively for thousands of years. Our landscape was shaped by fire and its utilization will not only protect our communities against large destructive wildfires, but also improve forest health and restore ecosystems."

    - Joe Hill, Landowner

  • "Being a former USFS employee through the PBA, I am committed to educating landowners and volunteers on the safe and effective use of prescribed fire, fostering a culture of stewardship, and collaboratively working towards a landscape that is resilient, vibrant, and fire-adapted."

    -Devin Dykes, Former USFS

  • “I am so grateful to have participated in the PBA’s learn and burn last year, a milestone in our community’s commitment to the lands where we dwell. Working side-by-side with friends and neighbors, we returned cultural fire to a landscape in desperate need. It was a beautiful, fully enjoyable day— I can’t wait to take part in more!”

    -Ivy Spiegel, PBA participant

  • "After years of dedicated service as a wildland firefighter with the US Forest Service, joining the Cascadia PBA represents a natural progression in my journey, allowing me to share this critical knowledge and continue applying my skills in a way that benefits our local ecosystems and communities."

    -Sean Frank, Former USFS
